HP Proliant DL180 G5 With Nehalem EP and PC2-5300 DDR2 Memory?

Please forgive…I just can’t resist a tongue-in-cheek post after seeing this. According to this HP webpage for the Proliant DL180 G5, there is a new flavor of server and new flavor of Nehalem processor for that matter. As the following screen shot shows the G5 now supports 2 Xeon 5500 (Nehalem) processors and further down in the page it suggests the CPUs are fed with up to 6 PC2-5300 DDR2 DIMMS.

All in the name of technohumor:

G5

What’s the problem? Being an uninformed hardware guy…

The DL180 G5 is a Xeon 5400 box and Xeon 5500s don’t like DDR2-5300 memory either 🙂 I think basically the page looks right if not for the Xeon 5500 part. As I was saying, technohumor…

    Daryl,

Nehalem has an integrated memory controller which doesn’t work with DDR2 at all. That’s not to say that integrated controller can’t support multiple memory types as AMD has support for both DDR2/DDR3 in certain CPU models, just a particular choice made by Intel.
